Smeal Alumni Mentoring Program
Location: United States Experience Type: Mentorships
The Alumni Relations Office manages the college’s formal Alumni Mentoring Program for undergraduate students. This program allows students to apply and be matched one-on-one with an alumnus/alumna who can share their perspectives from the business world. The program allows students to explore academic majors, internship and career planning, college to career transition, and leadership development with their alumni mentor for an academic year. Last year we had close to 300 pairs in the program and received positive feedback from both students and alumni. All of the interactions between the pairs took place virtually. Next year, we anticipate that most exchanges will take place virtually as well, although some alumni may be making gradually making trips back to campus. The Alumni Mentoring Program has historically found success in facilitating meaningful, long-distance interactions between students and alumni.
The experience of learning first-hand how to interact with a professional and, in some cases, making their first real business connection is invaluable to students. While this might be intimidating to some students, we typically hear that their mentor/protege relationship is more “informal” than they anticipated, once they got to know each other.
The application process is currently open for the 2021-2022 program. This program is for sophomores, juniors, seniors, sophomores in DUS or at a Commonwealth Campus. Matches get made over the summer, and the program officially kicks off at the beginning of the fall semester.
