Choosing a graduate program is both exciting and high stakes. Beyond academic programs, the decision to attend graduate school often shapes career opportunities, finances, and sets you up for success well beyond graduation. To help organize the process, the Graduate School Comparison Form allows students to weigh programs against their individual priorities and directly compare programs. Consider how each of the factors below aligns with your individual goals, values, and priorities. Use the table below to rank your priorities, define your ideal program, and then compare schools side-by-side.

For the Graduate School Comparison Form, review the list of factors in the left-hand column. In the Rank column, rate how important each factor is to you using the scale below:
1 = Not important
2 = Slightly important
3 = Moderately important
4 = Very important
5 = Extremely important/non-negotiable
Define Your Ideal Program
In the Ideal column, briefly describe what your perfect program would look like for each factor. Be specific where possible (for example, “Cohort of 20–30 students,” “Urban location,” “Strong mental health resources”).
Evaluate Each Program
List the graduate schools you are considering as Option A, Option B, and Option C. For each factor, rate how well each program meets your needs using the same 1–5 scale as above.
Compare, reflect, and look for patterns. Which programs score highest on your most important factors? Where are you making trade-offs? A higher overall score does not automatically mean a better choice.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” or “best” program. No two students will have the same priorities. For some students, funding or location might be the deciding factor. For others, faculty expertise, research opportunities, or career outcomes may carry the most weight. Once you complete the form, schedule a career coaching appointment using Nittany Lion Careers to discuss finding your graduate school fit.
