Your Fall Recruiting Playbook: Strategies for Success

Top Tips for Fall Recruiting Season

Fall recruiting is here—and it’s moving fast. The job and internship search is always competitive, but this year’s market brings even more uncertainty with shifts in the economy and the rise of AI in the workplace. The good news? With the right strategy and resources, you can stand out. Here are our top tips to stay ahead this semester:

1. Apply Early and Strategically
Recruiting timelines are accelerating, with many employers reviewing applications on a rolling basis. Waiting too long could mean missing your shot before the deadline even arrives. Make it a habit to check job boards daily and map out your application plan now.

2. Diversify Where You Apply
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Use Nittany Lion Careers and company websites, but also branch out to Handshake, Careernomics (check your welcome email from 8/11!), and other niche platforms listed here. Casting a wide net increases your chances of success.

3. Use AI Wisely
Tools like ChatGPT, Jobscan, Writesea, and OfferPilot can help you polish your materials and practice your pitch—but they’re no substitute for your own voice. Employers want you, not a copy-paste from a bot. Use AI as a starting point, then make it authentic and tailored.

4. Network, Network, Network!
Employers consistently say that connections matter. Show up to career fairs, info sessions, and workshops—check the event calendar at careerconnections.smeal.psu.edu. Employers do notice attendance and engagement. Online, go beyond LinkedIn: LionLink is a powerful platform to connect with Penn State alumni ready to help.

5. Be Ready to Sell Your Story
Know your strengths and be ready to articulate what you bring to the table. If you haven’t built leadership or involvement experience yet, it’s not too late—get engaged this semester to boost your career readiness.
