Getting and Staying Involved in Student Organizations

Getting and Staying Involved in Student Organizations

College is an amazing experience, filled with new opportunities and challenges. Getting involved in student organizations is an amazing experience and best of all, there is something for everyone. Student organizations allow you to make new friends, develop leadership skills, explore career interests, and give you a chance to find something you love.

Why Get Involved?

  1. Build Your Network: Student organizations are a great way to meet people with similar interests. The connections you can make through student organizations can lead to lifelong friendships and valuable professional networks.
  2. Develop Leadership Skills: Organizations offer many opportunities for leadership roles, such as president, vice-president roles, or even committees/chairs. Any role is important in developing skills like management, public speaking, communication, and teamwork.
  3. Resume Enhancement: Participating in student organizations shows companies and recruiters that you are committed, involved, responsible, and have initiative. These experiences stand out to recruiters and show your skills and dedication outside of academics.
  4. Explore Interests and Career Paths: Student organizations are a great way to find out your favorite hobbies and lead you to figure out your most suitable career interests.

How to Get Involved

  1. Exploring Your Options: At the beginning of each semester, the university tends to hold Involvement Fairs and Career Fairs, these can help you get a sense of what is out there and what you may be interested in.
  2. Attend Meetings and Events: Attending any public meetings or events are a great way to introduce yourself into the organization and learn more about it. You will be able to gauge if that particular group aligns with your interests. I always recommend attending multiple different organizations events, do not just stick with one. There are so many options out there that may align with what you love.
  3. Be Open to Opportunities: Reach out to organization leaders, ask about membership, and how to get involved, and show them your enthusiasm for joining their organization. Your initiative will make a strong impression and open doors to more opportunities.

All in all, getting and staying involved in student organizations is way more than a resume builder, it is one of the most impactful experiences in college. By exploring different options and finding your true interests, you can improve your professional and personal skills, and create a community around you. Embrace the different opportunities that you find, create relationships, and GET INVOLVED!
