Stay on track with your career goals this summer!

Summer is here! There are plenty of ways to make sure you stay on track with your career this summer:

  • Build your online brand: Make sure you have an up to date LinkedIn profile (see the Business Career Center website for resources). You can also stand out by creating an e-portfolio or website that demonstrates your experience and work history!
  • Network with friends, family, and alumni: Utilize your personal network to make connections! Reach out to family friends who work in an industry or role you want to learn about or use the LinkedIn Find Alumni function to make a connection with a Penn State alum in your field.
  • Sign up for a Smeal Alumni Mentor: Connect with a Smeal graduate who has been in your shoes! Alumni mentors can help you with major selection, resume & interview prep, leadership development, internship advice, and the college to career transition. Learn more about the program here.
  • Register for BA297 for the Fall: Sign up for this one-credit class that walks students through professional development skills in time with the recruiting season each semester!
  • Shadow someone in your field: Job shadowing is a great way to learn more about a career path you may be interested in. Once you network with someone using the tips above, ask if you could spend a day with them at work!
  • Intern, work a part-time job, or volunteer: Even if your work doesn’t directly relate to your major, the extra experience will add value to your resume.
  • Learn a new skill through linkedinlearning.psu.edu: There are thousands of free training videos that you can access, and many teach valuable skills employers look for!
  • Chat with a Career Coach: The BCC is offering virtual drop-in hours every Monday through Thursday this summer! Have a quick question for a career coach? Drop into the zoom meeting between 10-2pm to get your questions answered! No appointment necessary, just click to attend!
  • Have your resume or cover letter reviewedSend your resume and/or cover letter to smealresumes@psu.edu to have a Career Coach or Career Service Intern review and give you feedback!
    • Email your resume and/or cover letter (with job description) to the address below and receive feedback within 72 business hours
