Wall St Boot Camp is a program that was started by Robin Stevens and Dr. Randy Woolridge in 2007. The idea was to better prepare Smeal College of Business students who aspire to have careers in the highly competitive field of financial services.
Visiting alumni who currently work on Wall St. present weekly hour and a half sessions to a small and select group of students (50 max ) on various entry-level career paths in the field including, but not limited to, sales and trading, investment banking, equity research, private wealth and asset management. Students are also instructed and evaluated on resume, interview, communication, networking skills, and job search protocol. They must complete homework assignments and are evaluated on their self-awareness and knowledge of the industry at the end of the program in a mock Wall St interview conducted by the officers of the Nittany Lion Fund, Smeal’s 10 million dollar hedge fund of private investor assets.
The program has been highly successful and has had a significant impact ( along with the Nittany Lion Fund, the Penn State Investment Association, Leveraged Lion Capital, the Asset Management Group, and other finance-related organizations) on the number of students we have been able to place in Wall St positions in the past several years. It has also become highly selective over the years with hundreds of applicants applying for those 50 slots each semester. Those selected to be a part of the program must be freshmen, sophomores, or juniors who exhibit academic strength, leadership, and relevant extracurricular or job experience indicating the potential for success in the industry.
Sessions are held every Friday from 2:30-4. Attendance is mandatory for all sessions. Students will receive weekly instruction primarily from Wall St professionals. In addition, they will receive one- on- one career coaching throughout the semester from Robin Stevens. Unless otherwise notified, all sessions will be held remotely on Zoom.
