#Adulting: Maintaining the Job Search Process in a Virtual Reality

Far and wide across the university, students and staff alike are feeling the effects of the COVID-19 virus. As Penn State announced their decision to maintain an online-only presence for the duration of the Spring20 semester, it’s normal to feel uneasy.

Fortunately in the year 2020, most of the job search is done online anyway. For students looking for post-graduation employment, not a whole lot has changed as far as the search process is concerned. In fact, due to the nationwide shift to virtual technology, more companies may have their positions posted on digital platforms than ever before. Continue using resources like Nittany Lion Careers and LinkedIn to search for open positions relevant to your field of study. Do not be afraid to continue networking with professors and professional staff members through email, LinkedIn, or Zoom calls.

When it comes time to interview, be prepared to do so virtually. As the period of recommended social distancing remains up in the air, companies will likely adhere to regulations and move their interviews to a format using Skype or Zoom. Stay tuned for an upcoming post all about virtual interviewing!

All in all, be flexible. Realize that companies are facing the unknowns, just as you are individually, and may not have answers for you as quickly as you’d like them. Continue to work hard and stay motivated, even as things remain in flux!
